2022 YEAR IN REVIEW – eNEWSLETTERS

January 2022 – Can You Disinherit Your Children?

As a continuation of our March 2022 Newsletter, our April 2022 Newsletter provided specific information on how to take steps to change your legal domicile to Florida so that you can experience the benefits described in our March 2022 Newsletter.

 

May 2022 – Estate Planning for the Non-Traditional Family.

The May 2022 Newsletter provided guidance for individuals in non-traditional families on how to craft estate planning documents like powers of attorney, living wills, advanced healthcare directives and last will and testaments in order to ensure their wishes are carried out.

 

June 2022 – The Science of Closing a Merger and Acquisition (M&A).

The June 2022 Newsletter provided useful information on how to buy and sell a business while avoiding the common stumbling blocks and pitfalls often associated with these types of deals.

 

July 2022 – Estate Planning Considerations for Same Sex Couples In Light of Dobbs Decision.

In the July 2022 Newsletter, after the United States Supreme Court’s Decision in Dobbs, State Health Officer of the Mississippi Department of Health et al. v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization et al., which eliminated constitutional protections for abortions, we provided insight on how this decision might shape future Court decisions other issues such as same sex marriage.  We offered helpful guidance on how same sex couples should begin to craft specific estate planning documents in order to ensure that their wishes and/or end of life decisions are carried out once they cannot voice them and are disabled and/or pass away.

 

August 2022 – The Realities of the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022.

August 2022’s Newsletter provided an overview of the main provisions of the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 and discussed some of the implications of the Act on the country.

 

September 2022 – Estate Planning Strategies for School Tuition.

The September 2022 Newsletter discussed ways, such as 529 Plans, that parents and grandparents can help lighten the financial burden of higher education for their children and grandchildren and how to use your estate plan to do so.

 

October 2022 – Cannabis Testing of Employees.

Our October 2022 Newsletter provides guidance for employers on drug testing employees for cannabis use in light of more states now permitting medical and recreational cannabis use.

 

November 2022 – The Rise in Prenuptial Agreements.

In the November 2022 Newsletter we discussed some of the reasons why the number of couples entering into prenuptial agreements before marriage is rising as well as some of the benefits to drafting and signing them prior to marriage.

 

December 2022 – Workplace Policies Concerning Hairstyle Can Be Discrimination.

To close out the year, our December 2022 Newsletter discussed the rise in state and local legislation often called “Creating a Respectful and Open World for Natural Hair” or CROWN Acts.  These laws prohibit discrimination based on hair texture and/or hairstyles which are generally associated with race and/or national origin.  We also provided some practical guidance for employers to ensure they are not inadvertently discriminating against employees due to their grooming and/or dress codes.  This area of law is one to watch in the new year as more and more states, and potentially the federal government, enact similar laws.
