Federal Estate Tax Closing Letters

According to the IRS website, federal estate tax closing letters will no longer be automatically issued. Instead, for estate tax returns filed on or after June 1, 2015, closing letters will only be issued upon request. Taxpayers are advised to wait at least four months before submitting request. For returns filed after January 1, 2015 and before June 1, 2015, closing letters will not be issued for estates under the filing threshold in cases where the estate’s portability election was rejected, See http://www.irs.gov/Businesses/Small-Businesses-&-Self-Employed/Frequently-Asked-Questions-on-Estate-Taxes#1.
